“Our new location in Hungary will significantly boost our competitiveness in this price-sensitive compact premium vehicle segment, and will also contribute to tapping new markets,” Rainer Schmuckle, Mercedes Benz Cars CEO said at the event.
“Kecskemét offers the best prospects from a commercial standpoint and meets the high qualitative and quantitative criteria for a successful Mercedes-Benz production site. At the same time, Rastatt will remain a central proven component of our production network.”
Mercedes will invest 800 million euros in the facility. The preparations began back in July, with land leveling operations. Today's event marks the beginning for the paint shop's construction. Next year, work on the facility's body and assembly shops will begin.
As construction begins, Mercedes has also began recruiting personnel for Mercedes-Benz Manufacturing Hungary Kft. The first of the total 2,500 jobs will be aimed at finding employees for the Administration, Human Resources and Controlling departments.
According to Mercedes, the first people have already been hired and are now undergoing professional training. Mercedes is building the Hungarian plant in light of its projected line-up expansion for the two Klasses. In the near future, there will be four models instead of the two in Mercedes' line-up.
