If you found the recent spyshots of the facelifted 3 Series coupe a bit disappointing, then perhaps a first look at the next generation 3er, rumored to be launched sometime in 2011, may be a bit more exciting.
Unfortunately, the next 3 Series pictured here might not be so exciting from a visual standpoint. As you can observe, there's not much to see: the car is wearing BMW's distinctive camo in excess. Even so, some info about the car's looks are available.
According to initial rumors, together with official information unofficially leaked by the German carmaker, the future 3 Series will boast a larger kidney grille, with a new design. At the rear, it is all about retaining classic lines, with the 3er retaining the L-shaped rear lights.
As it happened until now, the Coupe and Cabrio will be somewhat different that the regular sedan, with the convertible version rumored to keep the folding hardtop.
Engine wise, there's a lot of speculation surrounding the entire BMW line-up of the future, not only the 3 Series. For this one, BMW is said to be planning the introduction of smaller displacement, turbocharged 3-cylinder and 4-cylinder engines, with outputs ranging from 122 to 240 hp.
The development was confirmed by Jim O'Donnell, BMW of North America CEO, who back in September said a four-cylinder engine for the next generation 3 Series will head for the US with the next generation 3 Series.
Of course, the line will use all the technical advancements learned until now and will boast the entire array of EfficientDynamics technologies. The hybrid 3 Series will use a range extended 3-cylinder engine connected to an electric motor.
Further information on the next-gen 3 Series will likely surface next year.
