Soundcheck: Performance Tech’s BMW S54 Exhaust Sounds Just Right

The exhaust of the new BMW M3 is definitely not up to par with the old models. That’s what hypocritical old fans of the brand are saying though, not me. I drove the new M4 and found that it sounds just right.
However, we’ll never hear the end of it. I’m being subjective right now but truth be told, the exhaust note of the E46 M3 was the weakest point of the car. The chassis and handling were brilliant and so was the engine even though it didn’t have the impressive numbers we’re used to today.

The car before it, the E36 sounded better and the E92 is on a whole different league, with its S65 V8, being the only M3 ever made with such an architecture under the bonnet. What we have here then, is a mix of three worlds.

First of all we have a BMW E36 M3. The chassis and body look absolutely pristine and we have to praise its owner for the way he took care of his ride.

Then comes an S54 engine. That’s the plant used on the E46 M3, a 3.2-liter inline 6-cylinder that used to make 343 HP and 365 Nm (269 lb-ft) of torque back in the day and a mediocre sound, as we already said.

The third component in this mix is the Performance Technic exhaust. We don’t have any additional info at the moment but it sound simply terrific, as a proper M car should.

Overall, this build is absolutely stunning, from the bottom to the top but the sound it makes creates that aural feeling we’re all craving for every time we push the pedal.
