Customizing a bike is many things to just as many people. The possibilities are virtually endless. You wanna turn a 1984 Kawasaki GPZ1100 into the kind of roadster that Tom Cruise would ride in Top Gun? Go ahead! The build we’ll be talking about today, however, isn’t as flashy.
Starting off with the Sol Invictus Nemesis 400 Scrambler, the peeps at Purpose Built Moto have created a reliable yet light all-terrainer that wouldn’t feel out of place on public roads either. Head honcho Tom Gilroy came up with the “Adventure Scrambler” for a two-week trip down the Great Ocean Road onto Tasmania, an epic adventure by all accounts.
The first elements that came off the 0.4-liter Nemesis were the wheels and tires. In addition to stainless-steel spokes, the bike was fitted with E-09 enduros designed for 20 percent on-road and 80 percent off-road use. Mitas Moto also offers a Dakar version of the E-09, featuring a strong carcass and high puncture resistance for higher loads as well as longer adventures.
Long-travel Gazi shock absorbers for the rear end, stock forks up front, and a custom-rolled aluminum fender elevate the Nemesis to the mostly off-road machine in the photo gallery and adjacent video. The round-bar braces are purposeful in their own right, and even the headlight has been swapped for a 4.5-inch LED housed within a custom aluminum nacelle.
“What’s the black-bezeled light next to it, then?” That would be the high beam, aright! 8-millimeter steel bars have also been welded onto the bike, and Tom decided on this design from previous off-road thrills and spills. More to the point, the forward loop is meant to help dragging the Adventure Scrambler out of trouble while the rearward loop acts as a support for the fender and taillight. The seat pan, on the other hand, is made from fiberglass.
Finished in leather and an Alcantara pad, the seat differs from stock by featuring more foam than you’d expect. Riding for so many hours and miles over uneven terrain requires a comfortable seat, don’t you agree?
As opposed to the standard 26-horsepower tune, the Sol Invictus Nemesis that Tom built was treated to the intake boost from a Honda XR600 as well as a DNA filter for the Lectron carburetor. In addition to custom headers for the exhaust system, the finishing touch comes in the guise of a phone mount.
