Despite the advancement in technology over the past few decades, the number of car crashes taking place on the roads of the world is increasing on an yearly basis, and the more cars get out on the streets, the more crashes take place.
According to the Association for Safe International Road Travel (ASIRT), about 1.35 million people die in car crashes each year, and up to 50 million suffer some type of injury caused by car collisions. Car crashes are the leading cause of death for people aged between 5 and 29 years.
In the majority of cases, the speed with which emergency services arrive at the scene of a crash is paramount to a good outcome for those involved. Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, a fast response doesn’t always equal a fast intervention.
One of those reasons is the vehicle rescue sheet, or lack thereof. A rescue sheet contains a wealth of information rescue services need for a successful intervention. Things like the location of cabin reinforcements, the location of the fuel tank or battery, airbags and so on, all are listed there for rescuers to use in a successful operation.
At least that’s the theory. In the real life, rescue sheets are seldomly used, in part because there is no centralized database for them.
But if the project that Euro NCAP and The International Service of Fire & Rescue Services (CTIF) are working on becomes a reality, that will change.
The European safety watchdog teased this week the Euro Rescue mobile app, a system that should “bring together rescue sheets in one place” with the goal of shortening the intervention time and save lives.
For now, no details on the app were provided, and we do not know to how many vehicles' rescue sheets the app will allow access. We do know we’ll find out soon: Euro NCAP says the app launches on Google Play and the App Store on June 17.
