Smarter Speed Cameras Heading for UK

British drivers are going to get a new surprise, but unfortunately we don’t think they’ll enjoy it that much. The Highway Agency is planning to install new intelligent cameras which are able to do all kinds of tricks, in order to stop drivers from speeding.

First new thing the cameras will be able to do is cover multiple lanes simultaneously, PistonHeads reported. The new devices will not flash, causing the driver to think nothing’s wrong, until you get served by your faithful mailman.

The new cameras will be able to determine size. This might not sound like a big thing, but it is, because this means they will be able to distinguish lorries and cars, enabling the police to instate different speed limits (lower) for trucks.

In other news, the same Highway Agency has revealed plans to spend a staggering 58 million pounds in order to install new dedicated cameras able to calculate your average highway speed. This just means that there’s no way speeding drivers will be able to avoid the long arm of the law.

The Agency says the primary objective will be to enforce motorways with variable and temporary speed limits, but once the units are approved by the Home Office, who knows where they'll pop up next. It would have been nice for someone to ask the drivers what they need, but their answer would probably have been “speed”.

So that’s it people, sell all your supercars and buy a diesel or a hybrid car. We’re all cruising home doing 40 km/h (25 mph).
