Skoda's third generation Octavia is currently offered with a choice of two engines, the 220 hp 2.0 TSI of the Golf GTI or the 185 hp 2.0 TDI of the GTD. However, that could soon change with the arrival of a brand new version, powered by a more highly tuned 280 hp TSI, like the SEAT offers in the Leon Cupra.
The news comes straight from the Czech republic, where a report based on insider information states the new 280 hp hot "hatch" will arrive in 2015 to celebrate the anniversary of the Skoda's legendary 130 RS rally car.

The output of the new 2.0 TSI Skoda might be getting is not coincidental. It's the same one achieved by Leon Cupra 280, currently the fastest FWD production car round the Nurburgring. Since the two share the same MQB platform and have identical engine mounting points, development of the new RS will not be a complex task.

Giving even more credibility to the story is the fact that two brand new Volkswagen models have just come out this year with 280 PS versions of the EA888 mill. We're talking about the all-wheel drive Golf R for the Japanese market and the 2014 Scirocco R. A third and fourth VW model could be launched with the exact same engine later this year – the Golf R Estate and the Beetle R, last seen testing in 2013.

One part of a quartet of hot hatches, the Skoda Octavia RS offers a blend of practicality and performance that's unique to the Czech car brand. Sharing some of its components with the Golf GTI, Leon Cupra and Audi S3, the Octavia is the largest of the group and has the appearance of a sedan. A 590 liter boot is available as standard, which stretches even further if you go for the estate.

The tradeoff? With 0 to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds, it's the slowest of the group and its suspension is not as refined or dynamic. Could all that change with the arrival of the Octavia RS?
