The town church was redecorated on Monday night by a 23 year old driver, who took his Skoda Octavia station wagon to the air. Literally. One of the police officers present at the scene told reporters "the driver took off due to unexplained circumstances, flew some 30 meters through the air and ended up seven meters up in the church roof."
Unexplained indeed. An average Skoda can get up to 241 km/hour from a 2.0 liter, 150 horsepower, four cylinder engine.The top version peaks at 200 horsepower, but even that is far too less for it to get airborne. Police says the excesive speed made the young driver miss a corner, crash through a railing and hit a roadside embankment. Aparently, the embankment worked like a ski-jump, making the Skoda take to the air.
As a result, the car ended up lodged into the church's roof, seven meters up. The driver suffered serious injuries and was transported to the hospital. Along side with treating his injuries, the driver will be given a bloodtest, in order to determine wheter he was driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
According to spiegel.de, damage costs to the vehicle were estimated at 10,000 euros. As for the church, the damages it sustained were much too great for an accurate assesment.
“I've never seen anything like it," police officer Knut Wagner said.
As a result of the uncertain circumstances in which the accident took place, physicists were called to the scene to help with the investigation and try to reconstruct how this accident took place.
