Have you ever wanted to do a spot of Nordic skiing, but lived somewhere where snow isn’t all that abundant? Well, now you can, with the new Skikes which combine the basic principle of regular roller-blades with ski poles.
The skates themselves are also quite different to your average examples, as they feature 15 cm wheels and inflatable tires. They can be used both on and off road, if the path you have chosen is relatively smooth and on the latest models, a ‘heel lift’ system is available, allowing for different styles of skating. Also, keeping in mind the fact that the greenest form of transport is that which uses no exterior energy, aside from what the human body can provide, so in this respect, this is one of the greenest ways to get around - even greener than a bike, as a lot fewer materials are used in the manufacturing process - less waste!
We say that the idea behind them is quite good, as you can easily cover large distances by using classic skating techniques, while also using your hands to push yourself along, thus boosting your range, stamina and speed. Several models are available and their cost ranges from $200 to $450 (€160 - €270) and can be ordered from most countries in around the world.
