Second Generation BMW X6 to be Sportier and More Aggressive

The current BMW X6, that has been in production since 2008, is about to be replaced by a lighter, sharper and more aggressive successor, over the next 18 months.

This new X6 will be the "half-brother" of the third-generation X5 that will also be released in the near future, as it happened with the current and  second version of the X5.

Taking the market's suggestions into consideration, the new X6 is going to be changed into a beast because this is what is appealing in growing markets like China, Russia and North America.

Design sources from BMW reported to Autocar that the differences between the new X6 and the X5 will be significantly more noticeable in shape but also in detailing.

“We want to give our sporting models a more individual look, separating them more visually from the more practical models in our line-up,” one source said for Autonews.

BMW is also aiming to resolve some of the problems the current version has. The new one will be longer (from 4877mm to about 4910mm) in order to solve some of the interior space issues. The chassis will also be changed, being reconfigured to have a longer wheelbase and wider tracks.

Weight will be reduced, by using hot-formed high-strenght alloys and the adoption of new axles, shared with the 5 Series. Also, the mechanical torque-vectoring system will be changed with an electronic system that will, allegedly, bring even more weight reductions.

Some new options will be added too. Top range X6's will ride on the same air suspension as the one currently used, but the lower spec ones will be available with steel coil springs, thus having a wider price range. Another new option will be hydraulically operated anti-roll bars that will adjust the stiffness of the dampers.

The engines will be upgraded too. The 3-liter petrol twin-scroll turbocharged engine will be improved as will the 3-liter tri-turbo diesel engine and the 4.4-liter V8 from the X6M.
