After all the back and forth discussions, rumors and then official statements, the Toyota GT 86/Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S convertible model was put in the grave as Subaru, the automaker that makes all three models at its plant, said that the car needs too many modifications and it’s not a feasible project.
But if Subaru is not interested in making it, Toyota, or should I say its division Scion, is exploring wether it can make the convertible model happen.

“It’s something we’re looking at internally from both a manufacturing standpoint – where do we build something that’s relatively low-volume, if not at Subaru – and from an engineering standpoint: Where are those resources going to come from to do it?” Scion president Dough Murtha told WardsAuto recently.

The sportscar is entering its third year now and the automakers need to do something with it to keep the sales up. Scion has already thrown in some limited edition packs for 2014 but it will probably need more than that after, which explains its interest to find a way and make the convertible feasible.
