Alonso was confirmed by Ferrari via a press release on Wednesday night, as he will replace Kimi Raikkonen in the Scuderia lineup next year. Just like Schumacher, Alonso will come to Maranello as a 2-time world champion and revealed he hopes to emulate on Schu's multi-year success with the prancing horse.
While welcoming Alonso – against whom he lost the chance to clinch two more world titles in Formula One – Schumacher revealed that he was involved in the decision-making process to bring the Spaniard from as early as 2010 at Maranello from the very beginning.
“Fernando with Ferrari, that's something I like a lot. I was involved from the very beginning in this decision, and I always liked the idea. I am sure Fernando will feel well with us, and I can only say: Welcome, Fernando!” said Schumacher on his personal website.
Hours after being officially presented by Ferrari as their new driver, Alonso admitted that he can barely wait to work with Schumacher. The 40-year old German nearly made his return to F1 earlier this year and is now advisor for the Italian marque.
“It will obviously not be easy and I would like to do the same as Michael, by winning many championships, but I think that it will be very difficult,” admitted Alonso.
