Schumacher Backs Ferrari's Team Orders

Ferrari's weekend in Germany was both successful and controversial, with everyone at Maranello expecting the decision of the World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) to find out whether further penalties will be applied to the Prancing Horse for the alleged team orders in the Sunday race.

As most of you probably saw the race live, we'll just remind you in brief what happened on the Hockenheim circuit on Sunday afternoon. Felipe Massa got off to a great start and gained the lead after the first corner, followed by his teammate Fernando Alonso and Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel.

After some early charges from Alonso to take the lead – Massa managing to keep his position until his pit stop entry – Massa managed to put some 3 seconds between him and the Spaniard midway through the race. It is when Alonso pushed harder on the acceleration pedal and started scoring consecutive fastest laps, bringing that gap to less than one second.

Massa's race engineer Rob Smedley then told his driver via radio “Alonso is faster than you, confirm if you understand”, moments before Alonso eased past his teammate for the leading spot.

Needless to say, this situation reminded the regular fans of F1 of the past Scuderia times, when Michael Schumacher won several titles thanks to the help of his teammates. The German reporters asked 41-year old how he feels about Ferrari's obvious team orders last weekend, and the 7-time world champion admitted the Scuderia could have done it “nicer.” However, if this technique will give them the world title, it's all worth it, argued Schu.

There is only one target: winning the title,” said the German driver, who continued by saying he “fully accepts (it), in principle".

With Alonso's win, the Spaniard got closer to the Top 4 drivers in the standings, while Ferrari's deficit to leaders Red Bull Racing was cut to under 100 points.
