The Brazilian city of Sao Paulo is getting ready to welcome the first fleet of Scania ethanol buses to be used in public transport, after the city's mayor, Gilberto Kassab, announced the introduction of the first 50 units in 2011.
The number of new alternative-powered buses to be deployed in the city, small compared to the 15,000 buses operating in Sao Paulo is just a start of a city wide effort to make public transportation greener. The city plans that by 2018, all the buses in Sao Paulo are powered by renewable fuels.
“The use of ethanol as a vehicle fuel is the best example of what can be done here and now in sustainable development work,” said Melker Jernberg, Scania Buses and Coaches manager.
“Ethanol accounts for 90 percent of the renewable fuel available in the world. By delivering ethanol buses to São Paulo, Scania is helping to strengthen Brazil’s leading position in reducing climate impact.”
The order for the 50 buses comes after field trials were held in Sao Paulo with the help of the University of Sao Paulo, ethanol suppliers, bus bodybuilders, operators and Sao Paulo transport authorities.
The 50 buses will be the first in a batch of 200 planned to be deployed next year. All of them will be manufactured by Scania locally.
“The initiative has shown that ethanol-powered buses are ready to operate in Brazil, immediately helping to replace the use of fossil fuel with a renewable source and offering a tremendous advantage in emission reduction,” added Wilson Pereira, Scania Brasil head of sales of Buses and Coaches.
