Samsung, one of the biggest conglomerates on the planet, unveiled this week a huge investment plan, meant to place it at the front of several industries in the coming years.
Convinced that the future lies with artificial intelligence, 5G networks, automotive electronics parts and biopharmaceuticals, Samsung said it will invest the equivalent of a small country’s gross domestic product into the needed research for the creation of new products.

In all, says the company, over $22,3 billion will go into these businesses in the coming three years. The bulk of the money will be invested by Samsung Electronics in the fields mentioned above.

For the automotive industry, Samsung is betting heavily on the eventual rise of autonomous vehicles. To that end, it will increase the number of advanced AI researchers to 1,000 across the world.

Samsung will also try to become the leader of electronics components for the cars of the future, aiming to lead the pack when it comes to supplying system-on-chips for autonomous driving, semiconductors, telecommunications and display technologies.

“Samsung expects innovations powered by AI technology will drive the industry’s transformation, while the next-generation 5G telecommunications technology will create new opportunities in autonomous driving, the Internet of Things (IoT) and robotics,”
says the company in a statement.

As part of the expansion, the Koreans aim to increase the number of employees it currently has on a global level by an extra 40,000 people over the next three years. Aside from the direct employment, the industries that will support the projected growth are expected to generate an additional 700,000 jobs worldwide.

Manufacturing hubs will also be expanded, as will the internal venture incubation program established in 2012 to support the 500 external and internal start-up projects.
