Saab Preparing New Small Car

Spyker’s CEO, Victor Muller is already preparing a new product for the brand’s line-up, in the form of a premium small car, as autocar reports.

The upcoming model has a special significance, not because of the brand’s recent faith but also because it will bring the retro teardrop shape of the classic Saabs to the market, challenging other automotive reinterpretation icons, such as Fiat’s 500 model. The car will be the entry level model to the Saab line-up. It bears the internal code 92 and may receive the 9-1 commercial name.

However, the new mini Saab will not be a car developed from the ground up, as it will borrow engines, key components and systems from an international partner. The name of the company which will supply the baby Saab’s organs has not been disclosed.

According to autocar, recent rumors indicate that Vauxhall has signed a contract with Saab for the supply of parts for the new model. Considering the car’s size, the parts will probably be Corsa-sourced.

Together with Saab's CEO, Jan Ake Jonsson (he has been reappointed), Muller intends to create a four model line-up for the revitalized Saab. This will include the 9-3, the new 9-5 which has already been presented, a 9-4X SUV and the new “9-1”, which probably won’t enter series production too soon, as the car is currently in its early development stages.

The new Saab mini will have to face many premium competitors, such as the MINI, the Alfa Romeo Mito and the upcoming Audi A1.
