Rumors Go i-crazy: BMW Reportedly Considering i4, i5 Models

Groundbreaking, revolutionary changes are the word of the day over at BMW, as the company revealed last month its two brand new concepts under the BMW i Future Mobility banner. The Bavarians want to be the first to really implement low-emissions strategies successfully on the global market.

But we’re not here to talk marketing, as we’ll focus on rumors that still run deep in the automotive industry, especially surrounding BMW’s future offering. An insider told BMW Blog that the carmaker is already considering new products under the ‘i’ brand, namely a new versions of the pair that was recently revealed that will consist of a longer wheelbase model, a sedan and a possible convertible.

First off, the i4 will reportedly be based on the i3, but will offer a longer wheelbase and only two seats. The little citycar was recently revealed in concept form with a zero-emission electric drive and a range of approximately 150 kilometers. Presumably, the i4 could make use of the same powertrain, which boasts a 125 kW electric motor and rear-wheel drive.

The aforementioned source suggests that the i4 will be a more affordable coupe, designed for the people who want an i8, but can’t stretch their credit far enough.

However, the i5 will sit at the other end of the financial spectrum, and will test BMW’s i-might to the extreme, as it it will have to be a light-weight mid-sized four-door sedan with Coupe-like design cues that uses the same powertrain as the i8. This means it will come with a plug-in hybrid drive with a system output of 260 kW allows a range of up to 35 kilometres in electric mode.
