After hosting ‘Scrapheap’ for many years, encouraging the building of wonderful machines out of junk, and doing so very successfully, Robert Llewellyn has shifted his focus to sustainability and ‘green’ principles in general. After testing five electric bicycles in a previous video, he now talks about the Agility Saietta, a British-built electric superbike, with the company's Director, Lawrence Marazzi.
Its designers started off with a ‘clean sheet of paper’ (i.e. new .cad or .max file) and wanted to redesign the bike around its electric motor. As a normal conventionally-powred motorbike is extremely complicated (all sorts of hoses, the actual engine, exhaust, fuel tank, pumps, clutch, gearbox and all the rest of them), the design of such bikes is dictated by the arrangement of all the previously mentioned elements.
And, as Lawrence Marazzi says, the design of superbikes has 'stagnated' for the past few decades, and their new bike, not being constrained by the complexities of the gasoline-powered motor, looks very different to anything you’ve ever seen.
It features a 91 hp / 127 Nm (93.7 lb-ft) electric motor which ensures that the bike gets to 100 km/h (62 mph) in under 4 seconds. All the performance doesn’t come at the cost of range, as the bike can go at least 160 km (100 miles) before needing a recharge, and if ridden with care, even further than that.
