Polish driver Robert Kubica’s rally accident in Andora was one of the scariest crashes we had seen in rallying in recent years. It took him one and a half years to recover, and despite winning his debut competition, in the domestic Italian rally championship, his arm is still not completely ‘ready’.
Kubica won all four stages of the rally, at the helm of a Subaru Impreza WRC, with Giuliano Manfredi as his co-driver - he managed to surpass Omar Bergo’s WRC Mini by over a minute by the end of the event. The Polish driver still considers this an important part of his recovery, which some day may lead him back into the cockpit of an F1 car.
He said: "Let's hope we can enjoy ourselves, without looking at stage times because in the end it's a matter of re-establishing the way of driving and helping the arm to recover better," said Kubica [. . .] Having been a driver for 20 years, my body is accustomed to certain things, and I can feel these things only while I drive, so we'll see."
