Robert Kubica Linked with Red Bull Seat in 2012

Robert Kubica will more than likely sign a one-year extension to his current deal with Renault, as reported by several media during last weekend's European Grand Prix at Valencia. Although some reports suggested that members of the Mercedes GP team have contacted the Pole for a potential contract with the Brackley based team, it is believed Kubica will extend his stay at Enstone for one more season.

Very soon I will have to take my own decisions and then we will see,” said Kubica during the course of the weekend.

It seems that his current contract with Renault has a clause that allows him to take on a one-year option for the 2011 season. That clause is set to expire on July 15, meaning that he and manager Daniele Morelli will most likely make a decision for the future by the upcoming British Grand Prix or shortly after.

The online magazine GP Week piggybacked on that story, reporting that a probable destination for Kubica may be Red Bull Racing, from 2012 onwards. The aforementioned source cited Morelli as saying that “next year is not our focus any more, 2012 is.” Given that, from all the big teams of F1, Red Bull is the only one to have its lineup secured only until the end of 2011, this seems like a plausible projection.

Mark Webber recently signed a one-year extension to his current Red Bull deal until the end of 2012, while Ferrari, McLaren Mercedes and Mercedes GP all have long-time deals with their current drivers. So, unless Renault develops itself into a title-challenging team in one year time, the Pole might team up with Sebastian Vettel at Milton Keynes.

In the recent European GP, the 25-year old driver was classified 5th overall, meaning he passed Nico Rosberg for 6th place in the 2010 standings.
