Road Colors for Speed Limits in Abu Dhabi

What better way to announce new traffic rules or speed limits than apply some sorts of “in your face” strategy. Road signs could do the job but, as we all know, at times they are not enough to make motorists obey the rules.

In an attempt to advertise, loud and clear, that new speed limits came into effect on Saturday in Abu Dhabi, authorities have resorted to an uncommon practice: they have painted the road surface in a color which looks oddly similar to that on which athletes run on stadiums.

The peculiar choice was made by the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City as a means to let motorists know that, from Saturday, January 1, the maximum speed limit in residential area is, according to Gulf News, between 20 (12.4 mph) and 40 kilometers per hour (24.8 mph).

Motorists are alerted they are entering a new speed limit area well before they actually get there, to give them time to adjust their speeds accordingly. If they don't, they will surely run into the updated radars of the local police, who will no longer buy the "I haven't noticed the sign" excuse used by motorists at least once in their careers.

The speed limits may seem a little low, but Hussain Ahmad Al Harithi, director of Traffic and Patrols with the Abu Dhabi Police, says the new limits are meant to protect both the motorists and pedestrians.

The new limits will apply only in residential areas and will not affect the ones currently applied on the Abu Dhabi –Dubai and Abu Dhabi –Al Ain highways.
