Rivian opened its 50th DC fast-charging charging station. It still has a long way to go until it can match Electrify America or Tesla. Still, the young brand is committed to its core mission – keeping the world adventurous forever. A new Rivian Adventure Network (RAN) is just what the doctor ordered.
Rivian will not throw the towel in and settle for what it currently has. Even though the young EV maker announced it would join other brands in adopting the North American Charging Standard (NACS, formerly known simply as the Tesla Charging port) in 2025, it continues investing in opening its own DC fast-charging station. Still, we expect to see the NACS connector or an adapter like the Magic Dock installed at every RAN soon enough.

The 50th such location was recently added to the map of live RAN dispensers. It's located in Mackinaw City, Michigan. That's very close to Canada and could serve as a great stop for those who come or leave the US through the country's northern border. Similarly, travelers who want to visit the Newberry State Forest Area or the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore can take advantage of the free electrons.

That's right – Rivian doesn't charge owners for DC fast-charging, even though it announced earlier this year that it would start introducing payment plans. We'll see if this advantage will carry on in 2024. We expect to see a pricing policy announced before the end of the current year.

On top of that, the Rivian Adventure Network is a perk available exclusively to the company's customers, just like Tesla's Supercharger used to be back in its early days. You can't charge your Tesla or Ford at a RAN.

Six plugs are available at the 50th RAN station, each with a maximum output of 200 kW. Fret not, these locations are future-proofed. They will be capable of dispensing electricity at a rate of over 300 kW once the brand moves toward the 800V architecture.

Rivian's already working on its own higher voltage platform, but it won't be available for the existing R1-series units. Most likely, the automaker reserves it for the next-generation R1T and R1S. Also, the R2-series could debut the enhanced battery voltage.

Rivian plans to open 600 RAN DC fast-charging stations in the US and Canada, which should have over 3,500 working cords.

When writing, the Irvine-based manufacturer has as active:
  • 11 high-power charging stations in California;
  • seven in Oregon;
  • six in Michigan;
  • five in Arizona;
  • four in Colorado;
  • four in Virginia;
  • four in North Carolina;
  • three in Georgia;
  • two in Texas;
  • one in South Carolina;
  • one in Ohio;
  • one in Washington;
  • one in Maryland.

That means the brand needs one more station to surpass the 300 individual charging stalls mark. It won't be a feat as impressive as Tesla's when it happens, but it'll still count toward EV charging expansion. Tesla recently opened its 50,000th Supercharger. Rivian owners will also enjoy unrestricted access to Tesla's high-power charging network from 2024. But they'll need an adapter.

Finally, Rivian also has a network of Level 2 chargers known as Waypoints. That's open to everyone who has a car with the J1772 outlet or owns an adapter. What's cool about these narrow stalls is that they're completely powered by renewable energy through a partnership with Clearloop, carbon credit acquisitions, and support from other similar companies.

Car shows on TV and his father's Fiat Tempra may have been Florin's early influences, but nowadays he favors different things, like the power of an F-150 Raptor. He'll never be able to ignore the shape of a Ferrari though, especially a yellow one.
