Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe assumes more roles at the EV startup, overseeing areas from Software, Autonomy, Design, and Vehicle Systems. The move is aimed at streamlining the chain of command at the company, putting RJ in direct contact with product teams.
As Rivian accelerates the development of the R2 vehicles and the Peregrine architecture that will underpin it, the company structure changes in response to new challenges. Based on a regulatory filing, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe will concentrate more decision power and oversee all product-related areas at the company. These include Software, Autonomy, Design, Electrical, Propulsion, and Vehicle, making him the product leader at the company.

The move is part of a more extensive management reshuffling, which also saw Chief Product Officer Nick Kalayjian taking the role of Executive Vice President of Vehicle Engineering and Propulsion. Kalayjian will focus on developing the next-generation EV architecture, codenamed "Peregrine." The Peregrine platform is crucial for Rivian's strategy, as it will underpin all future vehicles, including R1, R2, and the Commercial Delivery Van, formerly known as the EDV.

Kalayjian will continue to report to RJ Scaringe directly, but the plan is for him to transition to a product and technology advisory role. In an internal email sent to Rivian employees, Kalayjian confirmed the moves, stating that he wanted to still have an impact at the company while taking a step back from his current role. The former chief product officer said his desire to make changes "aligns perfectly with RJ's desire to redirect more of his time and energy toward Product leadership."

As part of the same reshuffling, Richard Farquhar, who has been vice president of propulsion, will assume the role of senior vice president of R&D starting December 11. He will also report directly to Scaringe, along with Brad Thacker and Georgios Sarakakis, who lead the Quality and Reliability teams.

On the other hand, Paul Frey, who oversees Charging, Energy, and Adventure products, will continue to report to Kalayjian. Frey will also be responsible for Rivian's Battery department from now on. Silva Hiti, senior director of electric power conversion, and Henry Huang, senior director of power and thermal engineering, will also report directly to Kalayjian.

During the third-quarter earnings call, rivian CEO RJ Scaringe confirmed that the R2 SUV, presumably called R2S, will be unveiled in early 2024. The R2 EV lineup will consist of more affordable models that will compete head-on with the Tesla Model Y. Rivian also plans to launch a compact pickup truck, probably called R2T. This should give Ford Maverick a run for its money and, considering Maverick's popularity, put Rivian in a solid position to reach profitability.

While the R2S will be introduced next year, production will not start until 2026. Rivian is working hard to build its second factory in Georgia, where the R2 EVs will be produced. The Irvine startup will invest $5 billion in the new factory, which will have an annual production of 400,000 units.
