During the opening episode of the current Top Gear season, which aired about two weeks ago, the boys were asked by their producers to go and buy three old hot hatches on a very tight budget for one of those typical crappy car challenges.
The point was to prove the GTi and SRi from 20 years ago are not as cool or fast as the hot hatches of today, not by a long shot. But Top Gear is not a serious auto review show, it's about entertainment, so mayhem, bad tuning and crashes were all part of show. Richard Hammond's pick, a beat-up old Vauxhall Nova SRi, faired the worst. It was crashed badly in a supermarket, had its engine completely ruined and was wrapped in ugly arctic camo wrap.
Funny? You bet, enough to ensure the Nova is now a part of Top Gear history. It was deemed so famous, in fact, that the car is now on display to the public at Beaulieu’s World of Top Gear. There, it joins a whole lot of other famous old bangers and even the famous "Cool Wall'.
