Rare Ferrari 400 Superamerica Auctioned in May

RM Auctions revealed that a rare example of Ferrari 400 Superamerica, one of only six SWB examples coachbuilt by Pininfarina, is set to go under the hammer in Monaco on May 1, 2010. The Sporting Classics of Monaco auction will offer 80 of the world’s finest motor cars, among which there will also be the aforementioned 1962 Ferrari 400 Superamerica Cabriolet Pininfarina.

During the model’s lifetime, only 46 examples were built, with only six being short wheelbase convertibles. The car is the last example built, and displayed as a factory show car at the Geneva and New York Auto Shows in 1962.

In addition to being the only one of its kind fitted with covered headlamps, 3309SA is equipped with additional special features and a factory hardtop.

With a fully documented history and unbroken chain of ownership from new, the restored car is an award winner at the 2009 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The example on offer is reportedly regarded as more exclusive, powerful and luxurious than a SWB California Spider.

The 400 SuperAmerica was powered by a 4.0 Liter Gioachino designed Ferrari V12 that produced 340 hp at 7000 rpm and could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 9.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 174 mph. The auction house, however, did not reveal any performance data of the example on offer.

The event will take place at the Grimaldi Forum, during the same weekend as the 7th Grand Prix Historique de Monaco. In fact, it will be the first time the company will hold an auction in Monaco, expanding its European presence.
