The all-new Range Rover is here, and it’s better-looking and lighter than ever. It is also the most efficient Range Rover ever, as well as the most technologically-advanced. However, Jaguar-Land Rover don’t want to stop here, as they have just given the green light to a plug-in hybrid version of the new Range.
Expected to share a derivative of the hybrid system which powers the Jaguar XJ_e PHV, which uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, which is aided in its work by a 94 hp electric motor, which draws energy from a 12.3 kWh battery pack. It allows the XJ to travel up to 40 Km (25 miles) on electricity alone, as well as sprint from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 6.5 seconds, while returning 3.85 l/100 km and just 75 g/km of CO2.
According to Peter Richins, the chief engineer of the project, "plug-in hybrids definitely have the most potential. The Range Rover is the logical place to start as buyers of this car are able to afford the technology [. . .] It makes sense to put it in the top car and let it filter its way down the range.” He also stated that the technology which will be fitted to the Range will be slightly different, yet very similar. Expect to see a production version somewhere after 2015, but before 2020.
