The old R230 generation of the Mercedes SL-Class, the one they replaced, was never really worthy of its name. You see, while it was fast and luxurious, the "Sport Light" name didn't really fit its two tons of weight.
Still with the SL 63 AMG, you got all those awesome looks and the cutting edge technology from Affalterbach, which made everything better.
What better way to show how brilliant the SL+AMG combo is than to put it alongside one of its classic cousins. No, not the 300SL – that's much too rare these days. Instead, we turn our attention to the second member of the grand tourer family, the W113.
Between 1963 and 1967, Mercedes made the amazingly beautiful 230SL, one of the most beautiful cars of its era. It was powered by a newly developed 2.3-liter mechanically fuel injected six cylinder engine producing no less than 150 horsepower.
Old and new recently got together for a photo shoot organized by SR Auto Group, a Canadian customizer usually specializing in wheels. All things considered, this is rather fitting, since the 230SL was famous for its wheel covers, which united the previously separated hub caps and wheel trim rings into one unit.
Placed side by side, the similarities between them are quite obvious. Both have almost the same style of grille design and both have creases in their hoods at the same points. It's as if they are carefully following a recipe set in place long ago.
We've put off talking about the power deficit for as long as we could, but it can't be ignored any longer. 45 years of engineering experience separates these two beautiful white cars and while they look equally sexy, the AMG packs a massive V8 with 525 hp and also provides a glorious V8 soundtrack that some supercars can't even match.
