The news that the liquid-cooled R1200GS was the best-selling motorcycle in 2015 for BMW Motorrad doesn't come as a surprise. We suspected this when the first information on the group's sales for 2015 arrived days ago, and the detailed data provided by BMW today confirms what we anticipated.
We reported to you earlier that BMW's motorcycle division recorded the fifth year in a row with record sales. In 2015, BMW Motorrad supplied a total of 136,495 motorcycles and maxi scooters, an increase of 10.9% over the total number of units sold in 2014, with the December 2015 sales also trumping the figures in the same year-ago month by 6.6 percent.

R1200GS account for more than 17% of BMW's total unit sales

The BMW R series represent the biggest chunk of the 2015 sales, with 73,357 bikes or 53.6% of the total sales being powered by the new liquid-cooled boxer engine. The old "airhead" R1200 power plant that is now used in the R nineT series fared quite well, too, as the model finished 2015 in the fifth position, with 9,545 bikes sold.

The leader in the sales charts was the R1200GS enduro-travel bike, holding the banner high in 2015 as well. BMW sold 23,681 R1200GS bikes, and this means more than 17% percent of the overall sales. The Adventure version of the R1200GS machine ranks next, with 18,011 units sold, while the R1200-based RT tourer recorded 10,955 unit sales. The other R machines scored well, too, with R1200R selling 6,951 units, and the new touring sports bike R1200RS 4,208 units.

A total of 21,110 S-series bikes were sold to final customers in 2015, with the S1000RR being, of course, the leader with the 9,576 units sold making it the fourth-bestselling BMW bike in 2015. The S1000R roadster recorded 6,473 units sold, while the new sport-adventure star S1000XR also posted strong sales of 5,061 units despite being sold only from mid-2015.

The parallel twin F-series bikes saw 25,616 units sold, as follows: F800GS/GS Adventure (6,603 units / 4,129 units), F700GS (6,282 units), F800R (5,971 units), and F800GT (2,631 units). 4,886 K1600-series bikes were sold in 2015, as well as 4,530 maxi scooters. Finally, 957 customers chose the C evolution electric two-wheelers.

More than 200,000 bikes sold envisaged for 2020

Stephan Schaller, BMW Motorrad President says that the goal is to reach the 200,000 unit milestone by 2020. He also believes that the upcoming G310R model (and those derived on that platform, red.) will help boost sales.

Our aim for 2020 is to supply 200,000 vehicles to customers. The 2015 sales figure shows that our motorcycle strategy is taking effect. And based on this strategy we have a lot planned for the years to come. We will continue to consistently pursue our current model offensive in the premium segment over 500 cc, and we will be entering the capacity class under 500 cc with a genuine BMW machine this year - the G 310 R.

“In the medium term we shall be offering further innovative products in the area of urban mobility and electromobility. While continuing to extend our sales activities in existing markets, we shall also be penetrating new markets. Asia and South America are very much at the top of our list here. Our worldwide dealer network will grow significantly from the current figure of some 1,100 dealerships to a total of 1,500.
