Oh you, Corvette lovers, don’t just open the champagne bottle yet! Peter Max, the owner of the famous 36-Corvette Collection who recently announced he’ll have them all restored and up for auction, has some legal problems to solve first. It turns out the famed pop artist cheated two New York men out of commissions on the sale of his storied collection.
"What famous Corvette collection?," you’re probably asking. It’s that beautiful classic Corvette collection set as a prize at a VH1 contest held back in 1989. We’re talking about 36 vintage beauties - which stand for each model year up until 1989 - that have laid in a dim garage until recently.
The guy that won the jaw-dropping prize 25 years ago, decided to sell them to renown painter Peter Max, since he told him he wanted to use the vehicles in a special art project. Sadly, the project never happened and the beauties ended up rusting, stored in different places.
As we previously reported, a guy named Peter Heller along with his family managed to buy the cars this summer and started restoring them piece by piece and will send them all to auction, next year.
So far, so good. But now new reports are that this could be delayed for an unknown period of time since, as according to New York Post, Jeff Wallner and Kenneth Simmons are suing the 1960s psychedelic art icon and his agent Larry Moskowits for $1 million. They claim Max asked them to sell off his trove of 36 Corvettes in exchange for a 10 percent comission they never got.
The lawyer representing the plaintiff claims his clients have texts and emails to prove that Max hired them for the deals. We can only hope the whole collection won't end up in a dark place, left to rust, again.
