Proton Previews Inspira, Based on Mitsubishi Lancer

Malaysian automaker and owner of Lotus, Proton, recently took the wraps off their latest model, a new mid-sized four-door sedan. Dubbed Inspira, the model is, in fact, a Mitsubishi Lancer in disguise. However, Proton’s Inspira comes with a redesigned front fascia, a new front grille and a front bumper.

The vehicle’s designation comes from the Bahasa Malaysia word 'Inspirasi' which means - you guessed it - ‘inspiration'. However, even though many think the Proton Inspira is meant to replace the Waja, which went out of production, they are wrong.

"Waja is being discontinued. This is not a replacement," stated Managing Director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir.

As for the new Inspira, which is said to have its global debut sometime next month, it comes with a choice of 1.8-liter or 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engines, adaptive CVT with paddle shifters, cruise control, dusk-sending headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, climate control air conditioning and a wide array of safety equipment.

The car's full body was not completely revealed. Only the front portion of the car was displayed. Proton said that the 1.8-litre model will be priced at RM79,880 ($25,800 at the current exchange rate) while its 2.0-litre counterpart at RM95,000 ($30,700). The Inspira comes in four colors, namely White, Black, Silver and Red.

"We maintain our stance in making valuable products more affordable for Malaysians. The car's distinctive sporty personality has been further enhanced by us with the injection of the renowned Lotus DNA of excellent ride & handling, while localization of parts has enabled us to introduce the Inspira at an affordable price. With these combined, what we have here is what we believe to be another right car, at the right price and at the right time by Proton," added Tahir.
