Promoter Announces Canada Return to F1

The Canadian Grand Prix seems to be a done deal for the 2010 Formula One Championship, as announced by local promoter Normand Legault in a press conference in Montreal on Monday morning. It seems the commercial dispute with Bernie Ecclestone has been solved and an official announcement on Circuit Gilles Villeneuve's return will be made in the upcoming weeks.

Last month we've reported that the F1 supremo had agreed to approximately $100 million cut of his initial offer to the Montreal officials for bringing back Canada to the F1 calendar. While his offer was $175 million for a 5-year deal, the North American representatives only agreed to a $75 million.

Urged by most of the forces in Formula One to return to the North American continent – mostly the manufacturers, but also the debut of US GPE in F1 – Ecclestone seems to have taken the offer. However, no official information about this story was ever confirmed to the media.

As far as the Canadian officials are concerned, all “commercial disputes” with Ecclestone are now settled and Montreal will 100% be part of F1 sooner rather than later.

I never doubted that the Canadian race would regain its rightful place on the FIA schedule, and my discussions with F1 management led me to believe that the event would return soon,” confirmed Grand Prix F1 du Canada Inc president Normand Legault in the aforementioned press conference.

In addition to their $75 million deal, it is believed Ecclestone has also imposed the Canadian officials to get rid of private promoting for their F1 event. Legault confirmed the news, saying he will no longer promote the Grand Prix du Canada due to “economic model currently prevailing in Formula One.”
