Porsche isn’t quite satisfied yet with all the new niche models it put out there, driving the usual die-hard fan into madness, they want even more variety in their line-up, apparently.
According to Autocar, quoting company boss Matthias Muller, the Stuttgart-based company is looking to take away some of the market share currently dominated by the BMW 5 Series. This would mark the launch of a new sports saloon sitting right beneath the Panamera.

“Speaking very frankly, I can say this is one of many ideas we have, to build a car below Panamera. But it would be a difficult decision, because Porsche has just taken a huge step getting into the Macan market — not just developing the car but doubling the factory capacity, including the body shop and paint shop. It has been a huge effort for the whole company,” Muller told Autocar.

Of course, such a bold move could prove to be challenging for BMW as the gap between the 5 Series and the seconds best selling car in the segment is slowly closing. With the introduction of a Porsche in the same segment, things would be even trickier.

At the same time, I can’t help but imagine that there will also be a rival for the M5 coming from Stuttgart and that really is an interesting prospect.
