Porsche Cars North America has issued not one but two safety recalls for the zero-emission Taycan, encompassing 606 and 749 vehicles, respectively. The federal watchdog's campaign numbers for said campaigns are 24V-215 and 24V-217.
As per the chronology published by the NHTSA, the manufacturer was informed of a battery fire incident back in 2021. The battery fire occurred moments after charging. Two years later, Porsche was informed of new instances of battery fires after charging. During this period, the German automaker collected batteries for analysis, with said batteries coming courtesy of LG Energy Solution's Wroclaw Sp. z o.o. subsidiary in Poland.

On December 6 last year, Zuffenhausen's favorite son finally determined what caused the thermal events: shorted battery modules. Porsche continued investigations with LG Energy Solution, ultimately determining that said concern exists in a number of additional vehicles. Regarding why Porsche issued two recalls instead of one, that's because of data. More specifically, Porsche doesn't have sufficient data on the 749 vehicles of recall 24V-217.

Due no later than May 27, interim notification letters will advise owners to charge no more than 80 percent of the high-voltage battery's capacity. Dealers have also been instructed to inspect vehicles included in 24V-217 for additional battery data to determine whether any module needs to be replaced. Porsche further notes that replacement battery modules will be manufactured using – get this – "an improved cell production quality."

Recall 24V-215 encompasses 2020 through 2023 models, while 24V-217 includes 2020 through 2024 models. Affected versions range from the rear-drive Taycan sedan to the Taycan GTS Sport Turismo and Taycan Turbo S Cross Turismo.

Owners are urged to activate over-the-air access to share battery data with Porsche. Owners can further determine whether their Taycans are affected or not by running the 17-character VIN on Porsche's recall portal. Every vehicle identification number should start with WP0 (i.e., WP0AC2Y16LSA70179).

The recently facelifted Taycan isn't affected, for the refresh was unleashed in February 2024 for the 2025 model year. Porsche delivered 320,221 vehicles worldwide in 2023, of which the Taycan accounted for 40,629 as opposed to 50,146 for the 911. North America was the brand's most important market in 2023, accounting for 86,059 deliveries.

Referred to as "New Taycan" on the configurator for the United States market, the 2025 model comes in 10 flavors at press time, beginning with six versions of the sedan. The most affordable of the bunch is the Taycan at $99,400 before destination, whereas $230,000 is the starting price of the Taycan Turbo GT Weissach Package.

As far as the wagon is concerned, the Sport Turismo is nowhere to be seen at the time of writing. Four versions of the Cross Turismo will have to suffice, ranging from the $111,100 Taycan 4 Cross Turismo to the $211,700 Taycan Turbo S Cross Turismo.
