When Porsche announced that the Cayenne would receive a diesel engine (this was happening when the first generation of the SUV was on the marker), everybody expected the company to introduce a performance diesel that would compensate for the fact that it’s an oil-burner that “wears” a Porsche badge. However, this didn’t happen and even the second generation of the Cayenne is stuck with a 3.0-liter V6 TDI unit that develops 240 hp and a peak torque of 550 Nm (405 lb-ft).
Rumors about Porsche introducing a beefier diesel on its SUV have been floating around for quite a while but nothing has been confirmed. Until now, that is. We’ve recently spoken to a Porsche source, who has confirmed that the Cayenne will get the VW Group’s 4.2-liter V8 TDI oil burner.
This is set to arrive by the end of the current year, but the exact specs of the engine are not clear. You see, Audi has pulled this engine off the Q7 with the latest facelift and, since the Ingolstadt carmaker recently announced the 313 hp BiTDI V6 unit, we would’ve expected this to make it under the Cayenne’s bonnet.
However, the diesel V8 is still present under the Touareg’s bonnet, where it delivers 340 hp and a peak torque of 590 lb-ft (800 Nm), but we could see Porsche take those numbers higher.
