Porsche 911 GT3 R Still Out Tweaking, Racecar Sounds Aggressive on Nurburgring

Porsche might have introduced the 911 GT3 R, essentially the racing version of the 911 GT3 RS, earlier this month, but with this being a track-destined machine, the German engineers are still flying from one vibrator to another, doing the final tweaking for the vehicle.

The racecar was recently spotted on the Nurburgring and, among others, it managed to offers us a superb aural performance.

According to Porsche, the 4-liter flat-six at the back of the car is “largely identical” to that of the GT3 RS, producing 500 naturally-aspirated HP. As for the parts that are not so similar, the exhaust system is one of them, as you’ll be able to notice thanks to the soundtrack of the video below.

The technical details

Speaking of the 911 GT3 R, this replaces the 7-speed PDK gearbox with a six-speed sequential gearbox. The power is sent to the track using 310 mm-section rear tires. In fact, the entire connection to the road has been redefined, using 18-inch wheels and a reworked suspension.

Of course, a serious diet is also part of the transformation. While the already frugal 911 GT3 RS tips the scales at 1,420 KG (3,130 lbs), the racer weighs in at 1,250 kg (2,756 lbs). The diet included a serious CFRP treatment, as well as polycarbonate windows. The innovation here is that the GT3 R uses the material even for the windshield.

It makes sense for Porsche engineers to still be out there, polishing the 911 GT3 R. For one thing, the competitional debut is scheduled for January next year, when the car will race at the 2016 Rolex 24 at Daytona, so there’s plenty of time for everything.

In case you’re planning to pursue your customer racing dreams, you should ensure you have EUR429,000 plus VAT lying around and that’s just for the car.
