Rumors about Porsche developing an entry-level sports car have been around for year and yet we haven’t received anything from the German carmaker. Now we have new unofficial information on the vehicle and it seems that the project is indeed under development, with Porsche set to give the car an all-new 1.9-liter four-cylinder boxer engine, as CAR magazine writes.
As you probably know, the entire VW Group is working to develop the new entry-level sportscar, as it is also set to spawn the VW BlueSport (we’ve seen this one in concept form) and the Audi R5. But let’s focus on Porsche’s version, which could bring back the iconic 550 designation.
The Porsche 550 should get a new 1.9-liter boxer engine that will deliver 210 hp and 215 lb-ft of torque. Porsche is looking to compensate for the rather modest output with a low weight. After all, the company couldn’t offer more power, because that would mean cannibalizing the Boxster/Cayman.
However, Porsche could leave behind the model distinction policy and give us beefier versions, which should use the large flat four engine that will debut in the next generation Boxster/Cayman. One rumored mill is a 3.5-liter turbocharged flat four, which should deliver 360 hp and 350 lb-ft.
Considering the fact that automakers are determined to make the most out of all developments, we might get multiple derivatives of the future model, with rumors going as far as foreseeing a shooting brake (not necessarily a Porsche).
