Pony to Lose Weight: 2014 Ford Mustang Will Be Lighter

The recent rumors regarding an upcoming Ford Mustang model that will be... something else, are beginning to make the car sound like an Audi TT or some other sports coupe. We’ve already told you that a four cylinder EcoBoost could find its way under the bonnet, an that Ford engineers want to turn American muscle into Global sales might, but we’ve got something new to add to the mix - less weight and better handling.

The most recent report from Auto Express indicate the 2014 Ford Mustang will be lighter and more refined than ever before. That’s not saying much though, as things that are more refined than the pony car include gravel.

We don’t want to be mean to the Blue Oval, as they make some of the most charismatic cars out there, but it looks like they want to join the sports coupe game in one big move that will forever change the Mustang as we know it.

“The design studios in Europe and Australia are working on it, as well as those in America. It will be smaller and closer in spirit to the original 1964 Mustang,”
an inside source indicates.

Built to celebrate the Mustang's 50th anniversary, the car will reportedly be smaller and lighter than the current model. The nostalgic styling will of course have to stay in place to honor like this, but interior quality will be much improved and there will also be more toys fitted. We like the sound of that, as the 2011 model is already much improved so Ford actually has a chance to make something that’s up to par with its competitors.

In order to celebrate the 50th birthday of the car, it will be unveiled across the world, including in the UK. The Mustang will also get a right-hand drive version for the first time ever, sold in the Britain, Japan and Australia.

To help make an even better case for the 2014 Mustang, engineers are reportedly even considering adding independent rear suspension which should improve handling and ride comfort. It could also put the power down a little better with the help of a similar torque vectoring system as that in the 2012 Focus.
