After all that massive coverage of big events like the Street Car Takeover at Bradenton Motorsports Park in Florida or the mind-stopping action at 2024's edition of TX2K at Texas Motorplex, the good folks over at the racing-focused ImportRace channel on YouTube are back to their usual venue - Island Dragway - for another Test & Tune Day filled with local action.
After seeing almost everything at BRP and the Texas Motorplex, from crashes to records and sleepers to stick shift wonders, then from exotics to six-second monsters and everything in between, maybe it's time to settle down. That's sort of speak when dealing with a quarter-mile dragstrip, though, even one that's a little smaller, like Island Dragway.

However, the venue in Great Meadows, New Jersey, is never short of quick wonders, as it turns out – maybe that's one of the main reasons why the videographer behind ImportRace loves to dwell around its premises. Recently, we have seen a few surprising pairings at the little yet feisty track – including a 2023 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 dragging a Mustang and some classic muscle cars just to get a nasty surprise from one of them – a six-second beatdown. There was also the awkward meeting between a Ford Mustang Mach-E and a Pontiac G8 GT that ended rather unexpectedly or a Tesla Model S Plaid that dramatically dragged another Tesla Model S Plaid.

Well, the action on this channel usually focuses on recent or contemporary models. Now, though, it's time for an excursion down memory lane with a side of modern oomph because the latest video featured below focuses on something other than a Toyota GR Supra failing to beat a much larger and heavier Ford Explorer ST. Instead, the prime time is dedicated to a very orange-and-black Plymouth Road Runner, that perfect Plymouth muscle car, according to some – as it was made on a budget and to a budget. At the same time, it also provided great performance all around.

This example, clearly, is not exactly vintage anymore – you can tell that as soon as it starts spinning those massive Hoosier rear tires. The Plymouth Road Runner got just two foes lined up for the challenger in the video – a C5 Chevrolet Corvette and a Buick Regal, both great exponents of their respective time periods. As it turns out, though, they tried to bite a lot more than they could chew from the classic muscle car age.

The first skirmish set everything into perspective, and the fast Mopar darted off the line to a spectacular 10.4s versus 12.53s victory. That's pretty wild for something that was in style back during the 1970s, right? Of course, contemporary technology is at play, and the second battle against the other GM representative showed that it can do even better: 9.97s versus 11.93s. It seems the nine-second pass was a rare occurrence, though, as the next one – a solo run – got it back to the mid-tens with a roaring 10.45s elapsed time.
