Pike Research has recently released a fresh bit of automotive insight, according to which US plug-in vehicle sales will hit 358,959 by 2017. This represents an increase of 43 percent on the current level expected for 2011.
These figures should very from region to region, with the most populated cities with the best infrastructure expected to be on top.
The smaller states are expected to spearhead the sales figures, with Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, D.C., and Delaware expected to lead the pack. This is partly because Hawaii has some of the highest gas prices across the nation, and it’s expected PEV penetration will reach 6.3 percent there, the highest level across the nation.
"PEV penetration will be influenced by several factors," says senior analyst Dave Hurst. "Demographics, consumer attitudes, and available infrastructure will all help determine the uptake of PEVs in different areas."
