Peugeot 508 to Get Gentex SmartBeam

Automotive parts supplier Gentex Corporation recently announced that it is supplying auto-dimming rearview mirrors with its SmartBeam feature for the all-new Peugeot 508. The highly acclaimed model has premiered at this year’s Paris Motor Show with the first SmartBeam system offered by a French carmaker.

SmartBeam uses a miniature camera-on-a-chip combined with algorithmic decision making to automatically operate a vehicle's high beams in order to optimize their usage according to surrounding traffic conditions. The system maximizes forward lighting while eliminating the repetitive task of turning the high beams on and off manually.

SmartBeam is integrated into a Gentex auto-dimming mirror, which automatically darkens to eliminate glare from the headlamps of vehicles approaching from the rear. It also allows drivers to better identify and react to potential hazards in the road ahead.

"A goal for the 508 is to deliver cutting-edge technology, and we believe that Peugeot has achieved that with the introduction of SmartBeam on this newly designed model," said Enoch Jen, Gentex senior vice president, in a statement for the press. "This is a first for SmartBeam with a French automaker and is also the first auto-dimming mirror with features offered by PSA Peugeot Citroen. We are excited to be working with PSA to bring this technology to their vehicle line, and look forward to a long partnership."

The 2011 model year Peugeot 508 will offer a base feature interior auto-dimming mirror in the European and Chinese markets. SmartBeam will be available in Europe as an upgrade option in a Bi-Xenon Light Package and is standard equipment on the top trim level.

Peugeot 508 is scheduled to go on sale in early 2011, and will be marketed in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and South America.
