Peugeot is developing a successor for its aging 5008 MPV. We already know they intend to call it the 6008, so it is about time we started seeing prototypes in road tests.
According to reports, Peugeot has ditched any off-roading ideas for the 5008’s replacement and chose to make the new car roomier. The future Peugeot 6008 will be called P87 in the company’s internal sheets and it will be a seven-seater car.
The new MPV will be inspired by the Peugeot SXC Concept, while the technical platform is expected to be the EMP2, the French company’s modular platform. PSA Peugeot-Citroen also uses the EMP2 platform for the Grand C4 Picasso, so a link between it and the upcoming 6008 would make sense.
Like recent Peugeot models, the new 6008 will have an improved interior. We expect the car to feature a smaller steering wheel, a simplified dashboard, and a refined instrument cluster.
The latter could get the “i-Cockpit” idea recently used by the brand for their 208 and 308 models, that involves placing the instrument panel higher than in regular vehicles and using smaller steering wheels to improve visibility to the gauges. Peugeot calls this solution their Head-Up Display, while it is entirely different from what we conventionally consider an HUD system.
Concerning powertrains, Peugeot is expected to provide its range of gasoline and diesel engines, along with a hybrid option. The latter could be a plug-in hybrid model with reduced CO2 emissions, and an electrically assisted four-wheel drive system.
The Peugeot 5008 successor was expected to launch in 2016, but the level of camouflage on this prototype makes us think that the French brand will take its time until it releases the 6008 to market. This brand-new car is expected to be a part of the company’s push to the Chinese market, but European customers will also be considered by the brand from Sochaux.
