Peugeot has taken the covers off its latest hot hatch creation and it looks good, really good. The 208 GTi 30th Anniversary celebrates three decades since the launch of its 205 ancestor and yet it manages to be totally fresh, with not a hint of unnecessary retro styling. In fact we'd go as far as to say that it looks just like the 308 R Concept.
What makes the little French car tick is un updated engine. he same 1.6 THP turbo that powers the regular GTi now produces 208 hp and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) of torque, While 8 hp and 25 Nm more doesn't sound like a lot, every little bit helps. It's the first car in its class to confidently step over the 200 hp barrier, with the exception of the premium MINI JCW and Audi S1.
A number of other sporty components have also been added, so Peugeot says the GTi 30th is a lot faster than before. 0 to 100 km/h goes by in 6.5 second, 0.3 seconds faster than a regular GTi, making this a faster car than the Clio RS 200 EDC.
Peugeot really has thrown everything but the kitchen sink at this project. Into the little body of the 208, they've managed to squeeze in a Torsen limited slip differential, as well as a retuned suspension and steering system. The GTi anniversary model is also quite a looker, thanks to a color combination of matte black and gloss red. Large 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Super Sport are provided and their asphalt-black tone only accentuates the red brake calipers behind.
Money no object, this has to be the most intriguing supermini hot hatch in Europe. Let's just hope there are enough hardcore GTi fans who want to pay big bucks.
