I still remember craving after small, fast French cars, like the Citroen Saxo VTS and its twin sister the Citroen 106 GTi. They were so cool, with their really low curb weight and peppy 1.6-liter engines. These cars are now more than a decade old and their no-airbags, no fuss attitude is firmly planted in the past.
Considering how much a used 106 GTi costs, I think it's fair to say there's still a market for this sort of super-fast city car and our latest rendering shows its potential successor. The new 108 was revealed last week, an impressive little creature weighing only 840 kilograms. How cool would it be if they made a GTi version of that?
Nobody is ever going to buy a car like this for a 16-valve 1.6-liter with fuel injection. What we need is a potent little turbo engine. Thankfully, Peugeot has just the thing, the 1.2-liter THP unit already available with the 308 compact. It could be tuned to about 130 hp, proving cheap thrills for the masses and commanding the respect of Peugeot fans across Europe.
Orange paint, larger alloy wheels and a leather interior would work great with a 108 GTi hot hatchling, as would lowered suspension and improved steering system. We'd give this car a 30% chance of ever entering production, so don't fall in love with the idea just yet.
Update: It appears that the Peugeot 108 GTi really is a good idea because we now have no less than three renderings. The demand is clearly there, just as long as it doesn't cost a fortune!
