Even if designer chief Harley Earl retired from GM in 1958, his 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible is still expected to fetch much more now that GM filed for bankruptcy.
This personalized Corvette Sting Ray was given as a gift to Harley Earl in 1963, which kept it around his Palm Beach, Florida home for two years. The car closely resembled the Corvette show car custom-built for the 1963 Chicago Auto Show.
Earl drove the car on a parade lap when he was honored as the Grand Marshall at Daytona in 1965, but soon afterwards he sold it to a retired Maryland Army veteran. The story of the car didn’t end here, as the vehicle was the subject of a local newspaper story, thanks to its new owner trip to California and back.
After this owner, the vehicle’s trail was temporarily lost until 1973, when it was purchased for $1,500 from a bankruptcy sale by a group of amateur racers. Its new owners realized the car was much more than it seemed to be, and went to the GM Design Staff to help them establish the car’s history, which also restored it.
Now, the Harley Earl Corvette is up for auction featuring the following technical specifications:
