Pepco Energizes Plug-In Recharging Station

Pepco, a subsidiary of Pepco Holdings, Inc., a company which provides electric service to 767,000 residential and commercial customers in Washington, D.C., and Montgomery and Prince George's counties in Maryland, just energized its first charging station for electric vehicles. The company also decided to purchase 10 Chevrolet Volt which will be used for studying the effects of vehicle recharging.

“We are excited to be at the forefront of developing an infrastructure to supply “fuel” for electric vehicles,” said Joseph M. Rigby, Chairman and CEO of Pepco Holdings, Inc. “This initiative will provide valuable information about the capabilities of electric vehicles and their growing impact on the grid as we transition to both the smart grid and an electrified transportation sector.”

As most automakers have plans to launch electric vehicles, Rigby is determined to work together with the car manufacturers, the Department of Energy, local governments and the utility industry, in order to be able to solve problems which might appear and offer support for public and commercial charging infrastructure.

“Technology alone will not effect change,” Rigby added. “To fully achieve the benefits of the smart grid requires a partnership between utilities and customers, and consumer behavior that is responsive to price signals and incentives that will reduce usage, reduce emissions and lead us to energy independence.”

The charging station infrastructure will continue to extend, as eight more will be placed across PHI’s service areas in the District of Columbia, Maryland, Delaware and southern New Jersey, as soon as the company will get its Volt by the end of 2010.
