Just when you thought the wonders of dash cams have come to an end and there’s nothing about this kind of footage that could surprise you all that much, the adjacent clip comes along and takes the dash cam game to a whole new level.
The footage shows a paraglider who had lost control coming towards a busy road. Like we said, this was filmed from inside a car, so we don’t even want to imagine what the driver felt as he saw the airborne man approaching his vehicle.
As the paraglider struggles to regain control, he somehow managed to miss the road in the last moment, landing on the side of it, somewhere outside the frame - while we can’t see the actual landing, we can at least be certain the modern-day Icarus wasn’t hit by the car.
Returning to the driver, this can be taken as a lesson, perhaps something they don’t teach in too many driving schools. The idea is that you should be fully focused at all times while behind the wheel. It’s amazing how so many people forget this, setting their backrests in a cozy position and turning their cars into some sort of motorized chaise lounges.
Not that this would require any experiment, but we once put ourselves through such a test and the difference in the driving position and the awareness had enormous effects on the obstacle-avoiding goal we had set ourselves. Nope, we can’t use the “no cones were hurt during this experiment” disclaimer. Not on this occasion.
