Open Top Cadillac to Bring Back the Past Glory

Having been left without an open top model in the lineup (the last convertible, the XLR, was phased out in 2009), American luxury auto maker is feeling a bit nostalgic. The past glory of what was known as the last American convertible of the 1970s, the Eldorado, has proven to be too much of a great idea for Cadillac to keep ignoring. So now, the rumor is the luxury brand is working on a new convertible.

According to insiders talking to Car and Driver, Cadillac is contemplating the idea of cramming a new soft top convertible right in between the ATS and CTS models. To be based on the Alpha platform that is used for both the other models, this new convertible will however not be the Eldorado. Not by a long shot.

The sources say the American automaker will sell the convertible cheap, although no one is saying what cheap means for Cadillac. Apparently, Cadillac will try to avoid the model being buried from birth because of a high price tag.

Under the hood of the soft top, the car maker could hide pretty much all the engines it can think of. Details are scarce for now, word being that the model won't be made public anytime soon. Sources claim the launch year for the new Cadillac convertible is 2013, possibly 2014.

Until then, keep an eye out for more info. Being, after all, the single American convertible in the making, the new model from Cadillac will cause quite a stir in the months to come.
