The ranks of sport bikes affected by the faulty Ohlins rear shock absorber have grown with the addition of two Triumph models. The 2014 and 2015 Daytona 675 R and Speed Triple R have been recalled in the US, with local road safety organizations most likely following the same recall procedures in more markets.
So far, Triumph knows that a 566-strong fleet will have to be brought in the dealerships to receive new rear shock absorbers. More clarifications arrived from Ohlins, and the Swedish suspension components manufacturer confirmed officially that as of 1/12/2014, Triumph was supplied with correctly manufactured RSUs.

The rear suspension will start to rattle and make noises

Ohlins says that, in the affected motorcycles, the rear suspension unit will start to rattle and make noises as the piston shaft nut become more loose. The nut was not torqued correctly during the RSU assembly process and may come loose, causing the absorber to lose damping control and even leak oil in certain circumstances. The loss of rear-wheel damping poses a crashing hazard and is not to be taken lightly.

All customers of model year 2014-2015 Daytona 675 R and Speed Triple R motorcycles manufactured January 1, 2014, to April 1, 2015 will be notified, and the recall is scheduled to start May 13th.

The defective RSUs will be replaced through the Triumph warranty program, at no cost. If you plan to get a pre-owned Triumph in the mentioned series, make sure you take a peek at the rear shock. The NHTSA informs that "Remedy RSU’s will include an asterisk after the batch code positioned at the top right-hand side of the RSU (Speed Triple) and top left-hand side (Daytona) for affected vins."
