October Brought Ford of Europe's Highest Sales in 12 Years

October was one of the strongest months for Ford, the only large Detroit automaker who hasn't requested financial support from the US government. The company sold a total of 121,000 vehicles in Europe, representing a market share of 8.8 percent in the main 19 European markets.

October was thus the tenth consecutive month of year-over-year monthly share gains and the fifth consecutive month of year-over-year monthly volume increase. In particular, Ford Ka more than doubled its sales in the first ten months of the year (90,500 units sold). In Germany, this was the best October in 11 years, while in the UK, Ireland and Hungary, Ford was crowned by the market leader.

"This is the strongest October we've had in Europe for 12 years, and it shows we must be doing the right thing in the eyes of our customers," said Ingvar Sviggum, Ford of Europe's Vice-President for Marketing, Sales and Service. "The key is having the right products at the right time for our customers, and this is why we're now the clear No.2 best-selling brand in the European auto industry."

"What's more, we've also seen a dramatic increase in the quality of our sales. In October, 64 per cent our car sales were to retail customers, compared to 48 percent in October 2008. Last month, 80 per cent of Fiesta, 75 per cent of Ka and 70 per cent of Kuga sales were to retail customers."

Just as expected, Ford Fiesta was the best selling model, with 41,300 units delivered last month. Focus comes second with 24,200 units, followed by Transit with 8,900 units.
