The recently facelifted Toyota Tacoma will not receive a diesel engine according to officials, despite the fact that the pickup truck's American rivals are in line for a new diesel powerhouse.
According to Worldcarfans, Tacoma chief engineer Mike Sweers put an end to speculation and made it clear that the recently revised pickup truck will not receive a diesel engine. Moreover, the Toyota official explains that while diesels have indeed been taken into account, nothing was done in that direction because of the new Tier 3 emission regulations.

This new standard will take effect in 2017 by replacing the Environmental Protection Agency Tier 2 program finalized in 2000 and will set new vehicle emissions rules in an attempt to lower the sulfur content of gasoline, considering the vehicle and its fuel as an integrated system.

As a result, diesel-powered light vehicles are more expensive to build. However, Sweers is aware that “diesel, from a fuel economy standpoint, is about a 30 percent improvement right out of the box”, according to Autoguide.

In addition, Sweers explains that although a diesel engine will bring an obvious improvement in fuel consumption, this change would also demand an additional after-treatment system that will make the car’s prices go up by $3,000.

Coupled with the price of diesel in the United States (almost a dollar more for a gallon than petrol), this solution is bound for rejection from the very start, despite the fact that General Motors will offer a 2.8-liter Duramax turbodiesel engine for Tacoma’s rivals, the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon.

Will this cause Toyota to fall behind its competitors on the United States market? Well, it could be just a matter of time until we’ll get the answer to this question...
